Schneider's Florist 2016 Year in Review

2016 was a great year at the flower shop! Besides all weekly updates of beautiful flowers, we did a ton of other fun stuff.

Back in February, we talked about why we send flowers, how to send flowers like a boss, and sending flowers to say "I'm Sorry".

In March I published the blog's most popular post ever, Plan Your Wedding With Schneider's Florist, where I unveiled our fabulous new bridal consultation suite and we met our new wedding expert, Ashley Neinaber.

In May, to make flowers the easiest part of your wedding, we launched our very popular Wedding Packages Service.

We got into videos this year! Our video of Ashley making a bridal bouquet, and this fabulous video of wedding decor at the Windy Knoll Golf Club both earned thousands of views across various social media platforms.

In July, we attended the AIFD Symposium in Anaheim, and we made time to visit Disneyland!

In October, we gave away free flowers in Snyder Park for Petal It Forward. Look for us to participate in PIF again in 2017.

Up next we have Red, and White Poinsettias. A holiday favorite for generations, our premium quality poinsettias grown right here in Ohio are far superior to the ones you might find elsewhere. They come in a decorative wicker basket and feature a beautiful hand tied bow. 

"How do I care for my poinsettia?" is a question I hear all the time. Here's an excellent article from the Michigan State University Department of Horticulture on poinsettia care. In short, poinsettias like sunlight during the day and cool temperatures at night. Avoid warm and cool drafts. Check the soil daily for moisture. If the plant is dry, water thoroughly but do not allow the pot to sit in standing water. 

"But aren't poinsettias poisonous?" Ok, the histrionics about poinsettia toxicity needs to end because it has been greatly exaggerated.  Check out this article from Aboutflowers.com debunking the myth of poinsettia toxicity. In essence, studies from the Ohio State University, The Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon University found "no toxicity significance of any kind." related to poinsettias.  

"But what about my precious cat/dog/iguana?!?!" Your pet should not eat poinsettias because they are not food. While they may cause some stomach discomfort if ingested, poinsettias are not toxic and they will not kill your pet. That being said, you should keep your poinsettia out of reach from curious animals and young kids.

So go ahead and order poinsettias, nobody is going to die and ruin Christmas.

Petal It Forward 2016 in Pictures

On Saturday, October 15th, Schneider's Florist was on hand at Fall Fest in Snyder Park for Petal It Forward. Petal It Forward is a nationwide promotion by local florists in partnership with The Society of American Florists, Flower Factor, and aboutflowers.com. Special thanks to Calvin and everyone at Nordlie Dayton for helping us out with this.

The goal of Petal It Forward is to share the experience of giving flowers with as many people as possible. To that end, we distributed free flower bouquets at Fall Fest. Each person got one bouquet to keep, and another one to give away. We had a great time participating in Petal It Forward and we're looking forward to doing it even better next year!

Where Do You Find Inspiration? A Floating Cube of Amber Mums

Before I came to work at Schneider's I was a lighting designer for a family of live music venues in Columbus, Ohio. I did rock and roll light shows five nights a week for a long time. I didn't have much training, but I always tried to get outside my comfort zone and take risks. I learned a lot from the big arena shows that would come through town and I would always try in some small way to apply the ideas that I had seen. 

Like everything else in my life, my favorite light shows to watch and execute were the ones that were strange or experimental in some way. Kanye West is out on the Saint Pablo tour right now with a groundbreaking stage and lighting design that I think is really interesting. I've shared a couple images that capture the essence of the design for me.

Brutal amber lights pointed straight down

It turns out Kanye is a big fan of sending fresh flowers. He recently sent Taylor Swift a giant cube of all white flowers from The Empty Vase Florist in Hollywood, California. 

"OMG its a giant Kanye cube!"

So all of this came together in my mind, and I created my own mini cube of flowers. It's a 3x3x3 inch cube of floral foam studded with amber button mums and suspended from a piece of copper wire. Then I photographed it in such a way as to be reminiscent of the Saint Pablo tour stage.

There's no real point to this post other than to show that inspiration can come from anywhere, and sometimes the best ideas are synthesized from other disciplines. What's your inspiration?
